“Very Low Calorie Diet” –

A VLCD or Very Low Calorie Diet is a low calorie, high protein, total food replacement that is used for the dietary management of obesity. This type of diet is formulated to be a nutritionally complete liquid or solid meal that contains 800 calories or less per day, they contain the required levels of micronutrients and macronutrients to ensure that all daily nutritional requirements are met. This is to aid in safe and rapid weight loss.

Very Low Calorie Diets can also be known as VLED’s which stand for Very Low Energy Diet – although this term is not widely used. VLCD’s have been shown to be an effective tool in aiding weight management showing a weekly weight loss of between 1-1.5kg per week, providing greater weight loss than any other forms of calorie restriction.

When you use a VLCD you are reducing your calorie intake to 800 calories or less a day, along with reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing overall protein intake which helps to shift your body towards using fat stores as a primary source of energy. This process is called ketosis, which helps you to lose more weight effectively.

Benefits of our VLCD range:

1. Rapid weight loss: VLCDs typically involve consuming 800 calories or less per day, resulting in quick weight loss. This can be especially beneficial for individuals with obesity and those trying to lose weight fast for health reasons.

2. Reduced appetite: On a VLCD, the body enters a state of ketosis, where it starts to burn stored fat for energy. This can help suppress appetite and reduce cravings, making it easier to stick to the diet plan.

3. Lowers risk of obesity-related diseases: Studies have shown that VLCDs can significantly reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

4. Improves insulin sensitivity: Research has shown that VLCDs can improve insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes or those at risk of developing it.

5. Motivating results: Seeing noticeable weight loss results in a short period of time can be highly motivating, helping individuals stay committed to their weight loss journey.

6. Encourages healthier eating habits: VLCDs typically involve consuming nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods such as lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. This can help individuals develop healthier eating habits and learn portion control, leading to long-term weight management.

At Optislim we like to stick by the following equation for a healthy wellbeing

Calories in minus Calories out = Weight loss (calorie deficit)

Once initial weight loss is achieved by following the Rapid Weight Loss phase, weight loss can be continued by following the Steady Weight Loss Phase. We strongly recommend that you consult with your Healthcare Professional prior to transitioning to this phase as weight loss can significantly improve obesity related health conditions and some medications can be discontinued or reduced accordingly. Never alter your medication levels without consulting with your Healthcare Professional first. Once you have reached your goal weight, you can maintain this by following the Easy Maintenance Phase.

Disclaimer: Optislim VLCD Program – Rapid Phase, is for the dietary management of obesity and must be used under the supervision of a Healthcare Professional.

Optislim VLCD Program – An Overview

Optislim VLCD Program is a weight loss program designed to help individuals lose weight rapidly by consuming a very low-calorie diet. The program typically consists of three phases:

1. Rapid Weight Loss Phase (Phase 1)

This is the initial and most restrictive phase of the Optislim VLCD program. This stage is suitable for people with a BMI greater than 30. During this phase, you consume a very low-calorie diet, replacing all three meals with any of OptiSlim’s meal replacement products including shakes, soups, and bars. These products are designed to provide essential nutrients while keeping your daily calorie intake extremely low, not exceeding 800 calories per day.

Depending on your weight loss goals, this phase typically lasts a few weeks. In addition to Optislim’s meal replacement products, you should eat two cups of mainly green vegetables to contribute to fibre intake. Drinking at least 2 litres of water is also important to help flush waste from the fat-burning process.

**It’s essential to consult a Healthcare Professional before beginning this phase.

2. Steady Weight Loss Phase (Phase 2)

After you’ve achieved your desired weight loss or completed Phase 1, you enter the Steady Weight Loss Phase. In this phase, you replace two meals per day in addition to a regular meal and snacks. (Both of which should be nutritious and well-balanced). You can eat 1-2 snacks per day with 100 calories each.
Although the calorie intake is increased, it’s still controlled and monitored to ensure you continue to lose weight slowly or maintain your current weight.

3. Steady Weight Loss Phase (Phase 3)

This phase is about long-term weight management. You’re encouraged to maintain a healthy, balanced diet by replacing one meal per day with either an Optislim shake, soup or bar and the rest of your meals and snacks made up from regular foods. The goal is to sustain your weight loss and develop healthy eating habits for the future.
